Why I Write

Hello friends. I’d like to take a moment to share a little bit about myself and why I write.

It all started when I was young. From kindergarten to 5th grade, I didn’t have many friends. I maybe had two. I had already been through so much in my life by this time that I probably should’ve been engaged in professional help from a therapist. I remember my mom bringing me to a family counselor when I was 12. The counselor made me color and draw my feelings. I felt insulted because I thought coloring was for kids, not 12 year olds like me. I never went back.

That’s when I found journaling. I would write in the journal pretending like it was a friend to vent to. I kept my journals hidden under my bed so no one would find them. I’d stay up until 11pm some nights to write. The journaling became my outlet. Little did I know at the time that I was using a healthy coping skill!

Journaling turned into poetry and I fell in love! I wrote a lot of poems. It became mostly in the style of creative writing/ free write as I got older.

When I write I feel free. I can say anything. I don’t have to worry about the pressure of “knowing what to say” or “how to say it” in the moment. And, there’s always editing! (Editing is my best friend). I truly feel like I’m my best self when I write. Even now, I have over 150 poems on my phone’s notepad.

When I feel inspired, I write. That’s all there is to it. It’s one of the loves of my life. I can’t imagine my life without it.

Sending love and light, Kel.
